About Adrián Fernández Milanés

Adrián Fernández studied visual arts at the San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy (2004) and later at the Superior Institute of Arts (2010) in Havana, Cuba. He currently works as an independent artist and as a professor on Documentary Photography in Havana for New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Office of Special Program Abroad.
His work has developed from the use of black and white with documentary perspective, evolving in later years towards studio photography and the use of digital media as well as color photography.
One of his main motivations is the impact of the material culture on the contemporary man. For Fernández, the objects of everyday life function as symbols representing ideologies, in which falls the subject's capacity to differentiate and legitimize himself. In the interest of representing the immediate object’s universe as a symbol of culture.
