Chukwudi Onwumere is a visual artist based in Lagos, Nigeria. His career as a photographer started in 2014 and his interest in the medium grew while documenting the beautiful city of Lagos, Nigeria. Chukwudi’s works is characterised by his view of the exceptional in the ordinary by making it visible with his personal touch, investing in the transformation of reality by using unexpected angles and perspectives of ordinary things.
The Nigerian-born and brought-up artist received his degree in theatre arts at the University of Lagos. Chukwudi employs the use of colours, shadows and nuances to experiment, question and explore family history, identity, socio-cultural and economic themes using different perspectives.
His works have reached audiences through publications and exhibitions in prestigious venues such as Photo London, The Royal Photographic Society, Bamako Biennial, among others. He was a finalist at the Capprize Awards 2020, a nominee for World Press Photo 6x6 Global Talent 2020, a finalist at ArtX Prize 2021 and the series winner of the Lens Culture Arts Photography Awards 2022.
