About Margaret Courtney-Clarke

Margaret Courtney-Clarke was born in Namibia (1949) where she currently lives and works. After studying art and photography in South Africa, she spent the next four decades working as a photographer between Italy, the USA and across Africa. Throughout her career, Courtney-Clarke has pursued personal projects in Africa documenting feminine identity.

Her return to Namibia a decade ago, marked a new phase in her career and her engagement with a people and landscape in crisis. Drawn to remote places, she has produced numerous award-winning books (Steidl.de) and her work has been exhibited and collected worldwide. In 2019 she was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet and in 2019 & 2020 the Contemporary African Photography Prize (CAP).
