Sivia De Giorgi is an Italian photographer and artist (born 1992) who lives and works between London and Bolzano, Italy. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London, in 2017 with an MA in Visual Arts and recently gained a master's degree in Arts from Wimbledon College of Arts, London.
Her work interrogates the narratives connecting people and landscapes through a self-reflective approach. Analog photographic processes are employed in her practice to reveal experiential knowledge of the natural environment, its physical and social past. The sites explored in De Giorgi's photographs are found where the land is marked by traces of elemental forces such as eroded coastlines, or by the signs of human presence in the form of rock carvings and ancient monuments, scattered within the landscape. The chemicals and elements affecting geographical formations are reflected in the darkroom. The images that emerge from expired photographic papers emphasize visions and reminiscences of particular places, visited on walks and journeys. Subjected to a collage-like method, layers of personal and collective histories often become indistinguishable in the reconstructed scenes. By combining and experimenting with alternative photographic processes, De Giorgi creates pieces that constantly investigate perceptions of landscape and the impermanence of the natural surrounding.
She is amongst the winners of the Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards 2020 and the Signature Art Prize 2019/20. She has recently been shortlisted for the Gilchrist-Fisher Award 2020.
